Directed by Walter P. Martishius and William Lau, the script was written by and acclaimed novelist Diane Duane . Released by Lionsgate and Universal Pictures on March 8, 2005, this 70-minute film is the fifth installment in the Barbie movie series and the first to feature an original storyline. It was quickly followed by two sequels: Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2006) and Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow (2007).

Barbie: Fairytopia (2005) follows Elina, a wingless fairy who must overcome obstacles to save the Magic Meadow from the evil Laverna, who has caused a "flying sickness" that has left all other fairies grounded. As the first original storyline in the Barbie film franchise, it highlights themes of courage, friendship, and true inner strength. In the end, Elina is gifted with wings for her bravery.
